Title

The Role of Therapy Dogs in Enhancing Human Connection

Abstract

This study examines whether interactions with therapy dogs influence adults’ comfort, emotional openness, and ease of communication. Conducted as field research during campus therapy dog events, the study uses a pre-experimental, post-survey design. After approximately ten minutes of natural interaction with a therapy dog, participants complete an online survey assessing feelings of calmness, openness, and social connection, along with short written reflections. Data will be analyzed in SPSS using descriptive statistics and group comparisons, supplemented by a thematic review of open-ended responses. The findings aim to determine whether therapy dogs foster more genuine and comfortable communication, supporting their use in educational, counseling, and community settings to reduce loneliness and enhance social connection.
