Title

Public Perceptions and Stigma Toward Using Large Language Models for Mental Health Support

Abstract

This research project examines public perceptions and stigma toward using large language models (LLMs) for mental health support. While the effectiveness of current general-use LLMs at providing mental health support remains uncertain, studies indicate that millions of Americans are already using them in this way. This study investigates public perceptions of the credibility, appropriateness, and social acceptability of using LLMs for mental health through a vignette-based survey experiment. Doing so will fill a gap in existing literature regarding public attitudes toward this emerging intersection of technology and mental health, which has important implications for stigma, help-seeking behavior, and the broader integration of AI into mental health care.
