Title
Investigating the Effects of Pex3/Pex19 on Peroxisome Membrane Fluidity
Abstract
Peroxisomes are specialized membrane-bound organelles that compartmentalize metabolic reactions such as the β-oxidation of very long-chain fatty acids and the detoxification of peroxide byproducts. This project seeks to uncover how two proteins involved in peroxisomal membrane protein insertion, Pex3 and Pex19, affect membrane fluidity. Using a series of in vitro assays, I will test whether Pex3 or Pex19 alters the permeability of membranes to facilitate protein insertion. This study aims to shed light on the peroxisome biogenesis process, which could have significant implications for understanding basic eukaryotic cell function and developing therapies for peroxisomal diseases.
