Title

The Importance of Comprehensive Health Education about our Growing Bodies during Adolescence

Abstract

Health education curricula in public school systems vary widely across the U.S., often leaving students with incomplete or stigmatized understandings of their growing bodies. This study examines how adolescents are introduced to information about their body health by analyzing K–12 California health education curricula alongside survey data from former students about their experiences with health education and care. It explores how and when adolescents receive essential health information and how these experiences shape their comfort, confidence, and ability to navigate healthcare. Findings show that while most participants received some formal health education, significant gaps persist, with key topics often omitted. Many students relied on informal sources for accurate and destigmatized information. These results highlight the need for earlier, more inclusive, and comprehensive health education to support bodily literacy, preparedness, and equitable access to healthcare.
