Title
Evaluating Material Properties of Biomaterial Yarn with Strengthening Additives
Abstract
This project aims to develop and characterize a sustainable biomaterial yarn using sodium alginate, calcium chloride, and chitosan. Alginate, a natural polysaccharide derived from brown algae, forms biocompatible gels when crosslinked with calcium ions, while chitosan, a derivative of chitin found in crustacean shells, serves to enhance the mechanical strength of the yarn. By systematically varying the concentrations of alginate and calcium chloride, and introducing chitosan as a reinforcing polymer, I will evaluate the resulting yarns for strength, elasticity, durability, and ease of use when crocheting under both wet and dry conditions. The project will provide insight into biodegradable textile alternatives with potential applications in eco-friendly fabrics.
