Title
Ancient Suchilapan Subsistence Project
Abstract
This project's purpose is to gain a wider context of diet variation in Early-Middle Formative Veracruz Mexico. I will be identifying ancient plant and food remains to gain an understanding of what foods mean for power, ritual and cultural dynamics. I aim to uncover how variation in diet affected economies that did not heavily rely on the Mesoamerican staple food, maize. Additionally, I aim to deduct how transitions into different social periods changed power dynamics in relation to diets. Overall I hope to gain more evidence and knowledge regarding ancient diets to add to interpretations of transitional theories in foodways.
