Abstract

Parentification, or the process of a child assuming the roles and responsibilities of the parent, has received growing research attention. The purpose of this project is to examine how cultural values (independence vs interdependence) and sibling-focused parentification relate to sibling closeness and symptoms of depression or anxiety. Although parentification is often viewed as harmful, it may not have negative effects in all families. This study explores whether cultural values explain when parentification is associated with distress and when it may foster closeness and well-being. This study will broaden our understanding of how culture and family dynamics impact relationships and well-being.
