Title

Urine crystals in TMEM16a-inhibited kidney injury

Abstract

This project investigates how the calcium-activated chloride channel TMEM16a regulates kidney tubule dilation and crystal clearance during oxalate-induced injury. Using mice raised on sodium oxalate diets with or without TMEM16a inhibition, we will assess how channel activity influences urinary crystal size and number. Urine samples collected over time will be analyzed using NanoSight nanoparticle tracking. We hypothesize that TMEM16a-driven fluid secretion promotes tubule widening and crystal flushing, while inhibition impairs clearance and increases crystal burden. These findings will clarify TMEM16a’s role in protecting the kidney and its potential as a therapeutic target.
