Physical Activity Field Study

Last Name:

Project Description

The purpose of this project is to better understand how physical activity is associated with psychological and social processes. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will take a naturalistic approach to answer our research questions and conduct a field study. For this study, we will recruit participants in one of two ways: (1) as they enter the gym before they complete an exercise class (either through the RecCen or as a class listed on GOLD) or workout, or (2) as they are leaving the gym after they completed an exercise class or workout. Participants will be randomly assigned to complete a short survey either before or after engaging in physical activity. Participants will answer questions about their psychological well-being (mood, emotions, mental health, cognitive engagement) as well as their social relationships. For those who complete the survey after exercising, they will also answer questions about the physical activity they just engaged in.

Undergraduate Contribution

Research assistants will be involved in all aspects of the project, which include conducting literature reviews, assisting with design and methodology, recruiting and running participants, and coding written responses.
