Project Description

Promoting prosocial peer relations and problem solving skills are essential to facilitate healthy child development.  Professor Jimerson invites undergraduates who are are passionate to become involved with a project focused on promoting pro-social development and problem solving among elementary-age students (grades 1-6) to review the information below. Professor Jimerson envisions this opportunity as especially suitable for those students who aim to attend graduate school in fields that include an emphasis on knowledge of child development, including those interested in fields related to the applied psychology minor program.
 
CNCSP 197 is the seminar students attend in conjunction with fieldwork experience through the Power of Play project. The Power of Play project focuses on the utility of specific playground strategies targeted to facilitate prosocial play activities and the development of conflict resolution and problem solving skills among elementary-aged children.
 
This seminar introduces a review of recent methods and relevant literature to help promote the social, emotional, and cognitive competence of children. Presentations and discussions will focus on research pertaining to prevention and intervention efforts for students in a school setting. You will be involved in weekly fieldwork experience with the Power of Play project to enable you to work with elementary school-age children, in order to apply the competencies and practices learned in the classroom in a real world setting. This fieldwork will focus on the utility of specific playground strategies targeted to facilitate pro-social play activities and the development of conflict resolution and problem solving skills among elementary-aged children.
 
Responsibilities include: participating in weekly seminar meetings; implementing the Power of Play program with elementary-aged children; and reviewing relevant literature. The number of units you sign up for is based on your participation in seminar (worth one unit) and the number of hours you commit to volunteer, with each unit being worth 30 hours (3 hours per week).

Undergraduate Contribution

Undergraduate students are involved in weekly fieldwork experience with the Power of Play project to enable you to work with elementary school-age children, in order to apply the competencies and practices learned in the classroom in a real world setting. This fieldwork will focus on the utility of specific playground strategies targeted to facilitate pro-social play activities and the development of conflict resolution and problem solving skills among elementary-aged children.
