Abstract

How are powers of domination existing within digital spaces? Who are the people actively fighting against these digital powers of domination? Drawing upon a range of theoretical literature and Black artists, I explore claims that digital technologies enable Black women to engage in art making that openly interrogates limiting hierarchies of gender, race and the physical and social world. I consider the various modes of identity formation that Black women navigate through digital communication via textiles and immersive web experiences. Specifically, the ways that Qualeasha Wood navigates the interweavings of technology and Black ontology through her textiles and live performances and how Stephanie Dinkins multidisciplinary works tie together intergenerational identity formation of Black women. I argue that the application of an Black cyberfeminist practice could aid in interrogating the dehumanization of black bodies and contribute to dialogues about imaging and creating a digital future beyond dominance.
